
A vaccine is a preparation that trains the immune system to recognise and fight a specific pathogen without causing the disease itself.
How immunity is built
The immune system remembers pathogens it has encountered. A vaccine presents a harmless version or fragment of a pathogen — an inactivated virus, a weakened strain, a surface protein, or instructions for the body to make that protein. The immune system responds by producing antibodies and memory cells. If the real pathogen appears later, the response is faster and stronger.
Main types
- Inactivated — the pathogen is killed and cannot replicate.
- Live attenuated — a weakened strain that replicates poorly.
- Subunit — only selected proteins are used.
- Toxoid — targets a bacterial toxin rather than the bacterium.
- mRNA and viral vector — deliver genetic instructions so that cells produce a target protein.
Population effect
When a large enough share of a population is immune, transmission chains break and even unvaccinated individuals are indirectly protected. This effect is what allows the elimination of some diseases, and it is why coverage levels matter as much as individual protection.
Safety monitoring
Vaccines are tested in sequential clinical trial phases and then monitored continuously after approval. Because they are given to healthy people, the tolerance for side effects is far lower than for treatments given to the sick. Serious adverse events are rare and are tracked through national reporting systems.
