Renewable energy is energy obtained from sources that replenish naturally on a human timescale — sunlight, wind, flowing water, biomass and heat from the Earth's interior.
Main sources
- Solar — photovoltaic panels convert light directly into electricity; solar thermal systems use heat.
- Wind — turbines convert the kinetic energy of moving air.
- Hydropower — the oldest large-scale renewable source, using the flow of water.
- Geothermal — heat from underground used for electricity and heating.
- Biomass — organic material burned or converted into fuel.
The intermittency problem
Sunlight and wind are variable. A grid must match supply and demand every second, so high shares of variable sources require:
- storage — batteries, pumped hydro, thermal storage;
- grid interconnection across regions, so a calm day in one place is covered by another;
- demand flexibility — shifting consumption to hours of high generation;
- dispatchable backup capacity for extended low-output periods.
Economics
Costs of solar and wind generation have fallen dramatically over the past two decades, and in many markets new renewable capacity is now cheaper per unit of electricity than new fossil capacity. The remaining cost challenge has moved from generation to integration: storage, grid upgrades and balancing.
Environmental considerations
Renewables produce little or no greenhouse gas during operation, but they are not without impact. Manufacturing requires mining and processing of materials, hydropower alters river ecosystems, and wind and solar farms occupy land. Responsible planning weighs these effects against those of the alternatives.
Relevance for Central Asia
The region receives high levels of solar radiation and has significant wind potential, while water resources are limited and shared between countries. This combination makes solar and wind particularly attractive, and makes water-efficient planning essential.
