Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. Since the industrial era, the dominant driver has been human activity, above all the burning of fossil fuels, which increases the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect
Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface. The surface radiates heat back as infrared radiation. Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide absorb part of that radiation and re-emit it, keeping the planet warmer than it would otherwise be. This effect is natural and necessary for life; the problem is its intensification.
Observed effects
- rising global average surface temperature;
- retreat of glaciers and reduction of sea ice;
- rising sea levels from thermal expansion and melting ice;
- more frequent heatwaves and heavy precipitation events;
- shifts in growing seasons and species ranges.
Effects on dry regions
Arid and semi-arid regions face a specific combination of risks: higher evaporation, reduced snowpack in mountains that feed rivers, and greater year-to-year variability in water supply. For agriculture based on irrigation, the timing of river flow matters as much as the total volume.
Mitigation and adaptation
Mitigation reduces the cause: shifting to low-carbon energy, improving efficiency, reducing methane leaks, changing land use.
Adaptation reduces the damage: water-efficient irrigation, drought-tolerant crops, heat-resilient urban planning, early warning systems.
Both are necessary. Emissions already released continue to affect the climate for a long time, so adaptation cannot be avoided even under rapid mitigation.
How the science is established
Conclusions rest on multiple independent lines of evidence: direct measurement, satellite observation, ice cores, ocean heat content and physical models. Agreement between these methods, not any single dataset, is what makes the overall picture robust.
